Amuseum: making a museum explain itself

An augmented reality guide for the National Museum of Science and Technology in Lahore, built so that a child arriving without prior knowledge, a guidebook or an adult to explain things can still leave having learned something.

The premise

A museum only teaches the visitors it was written for.

Public museums are one of the few free learning resources open to every child in a city. But an exhibit hall speaks through small printed labels, assumed background knowledge and, when available, a guide. A student who arrives without those advantages walks past the same objects and takes less away. Amuseum treats that gap as a design problem in the visit itself, not a shortfall in the visitor.

How we worked

Built around the objects, tested with the students

Exhibits were selected with museum staff, studied object by object, then captured and rebuilt so that pointing a phone at a display case adds the explanation a label cannot hold: how a mechanism moves, what it was used for, and why it is in the room.

Evaluation happened where it counts — in the galleries, during a real visit, with students the museum does not currently reach well.

Selecting the exhibits that carry the most learning and identifying what visitors consistently misread or walk past.

Recording and rendering the exhibits

Each chosen object recorded and rendered as an AR layer, so parts, motion and scale can be shown rather than described.

On-site study with 30 students

Students from the SOS Children's Village toured the galleries with the guide, with observation and feedback gathered during and after the visit.

Findings back to the museum

What worked, what confused, and which changes need no technology at all — wording, sequence and signage in the galleries themselves.

Designed for the visitor with the least

If a child with no prior exposure to the subject can follow it unaided, every other visitor is served too.

Show, do not caption

Mechanisms shown in motion and objects shown in use, so understanding does not depend on reading a dense label first.

Independent of a guide

A group of thirty rarely gets one guide's attention each. The exhibit answers directly, at whatever pace a student sets.

Curiosity has somewhere to go

Follow-up detail sits behind each object, so a question raised in the gallery does not end at the end of the label.

A visit that works without a guide

School groups arriving unannounced or without staff support still get an explained tour, which changes what the museum can offer at scale.

Evidence about how galleries are read

Observation of where students stop, skip and get stuck is useful to curators whether or not the AR layer is deployed.

Reaches students the museum misses

Designed and tested with children from a care setting, rather than the well-prepared school group museums usually design around.

Extendable object by object

Each exhibit is a self-contained piece of content, so the guide can grow one gallery at a time within an existing budget.

Why it matters

Access is not the same as admission

Letting every child through the door is the easy half. The harder half is designing the experience so that what is inside is legible to all of them. That is the same work as redesigning a form or a clinic queue, carried out in a gallery.
